Detailed scorecard – U16 Hambledon v U16 Hoggets – 24.07.20 (detailed)

Despite the forecast not looking promising the U16 Hoggets made the journey to Hambledon CC to play a 30 over friendly.

The Hoggets won the toss and elected to bat on what seemed to be a hard, dry deck. With the loss of two early wickets and things looking shaky, Joe Lewis and Barnaby Talbot-Williams set about steadying proceedings. Although conditions weren’t quite as easy as they seemed, Joe batted very well in the circumstances, ending on 47 (64 balls). With the score at 71-3 (17.2 overs) and the run rate looking slow, out to the crease walked Wilf La Fontaine Jackson. Wilf started strong, relishing his middle order role, and orchestrated some useful partnerships with later-in batters, retiring not out on 53(43 balls). With Charlie Ricketts taking some risky runs, accompanied by Jorja Wright, the Hoggets finished 143/4 after their 30 overs, a respectable score for the conditions.

After the tea break, with Hambledon’s coach having positioned the sight-screens finally (something not used by the Hogget batters), and batting conditions becoming slightly easier, the Hoggets set about defending their total. However, with too many short balls bowled, and some confident top-order batting, Hambledon were never in trouble, and despite some acrobatic fielding, especially from Joe Lewis, Hambledon knocked off the total with five overs to spare.

In spite of the result, it was fun to be back out in the field representing the Hoggets, and Hambledon are keen for a return fixture.
