Marlborough Blues won by 4 wickets

Recap

Hampshire Hogs v Marlborough Blues – 15.07.17

The Hogs started the day in high spirits, ready for what promised to be a testing game against a youthful Blues outfit, filled with energy and enthusiasm. Having lost the toss, the Hogs were first to bat on what was a slow wicket and testing conditions, due to the overcast morning. However I was still confident we could go out and set a competitive total, as our top 4 all had 1st XI experience, and could deal with what the Blues had to offer…

Unfortunately due to a bit of rustiness and good bowling, that wasn’t the case. The Hogs found themselves in a dire situation by lunch time. 91-7, also with Rob Shipster, a lower order hero two weeks previous, had got out in the over before lunch. Notable contributions from Ben Vail and Ed Wakefield, who made up just under half the runs. Annoyingly only 112 of them.

Staring down the barrel, our strong bowling lineup didn’t have nearly enough to work with and so had to be extremely aggressive, which allowed the opening stand to race to 60 from 9 overs.

In the end we had the Blues 6 down by the time they scored the winning runs, so our bowlers gave a valiant effort! Fault lies with the batsman today, but all in all I think it was a fun day for all involved.

Many thanks to all who agreed to play, especially James Wakefield, who only attended to watch his boys, only to be roped in after 11:30!!

Until next year!
